Kedron Uses Senses to Make Applesauce

Kedron Elementary kindergarteners used their five senses to craft homemade applesauce.

It was a sweet day of learning as the whole grade did a science unit focused on sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch.

Before beginning, students made predictions about what would happen to the apples as they cooked and discussed why they thought the apples might change. Throughout the process, students used Turn & Talk opportunities to share their observations and thinking with classmates.

To close the lesson, they reflected on the different senses they had used throughout the activity and connected their observations back to what they had been learning in science.

The activity provided students with an authentic opportunity to use all five senses. They heard the apples being peeled, saw the apples change, felt the wet and sticky texture, and smelled the apples and cinnamon as the applesauce cooked. Once the applesauce was ready, students also used their sense of taste to experience the finished product.

“We hope students were able to see that science is all around them and that learning can be hands-on, collaborative, and fun,” said teacher Fallon Smiroldo.
