Superior Court Judge W. Fletcher Sams has formally notified Governor Brian P. Kemp of his intention to retire from the bench, effective midnight on January 31, 2026.
In his letter to the governor, Sams reflected on his years of service, noting that he previously served as District Attorney for the Griffin Judicial Circuit and as Judge for the State Court of Fayette County before his appointment to the Superior Court in 2010. He wrote that serving as a Superior Court judge for the past 15 years has been “my greatest honor.”
Sams stated that “there comes a time when older judges should step aside and encourage younger blood to carry the torch,” adding that he believes he has reached that time. He also expressed confidence in the governor’s record of judicial appointments, writing that it “makes my decision more comfortable knowing you will leave us in good hands.”
As part of his retirement request, Sams has asked Governor Kemp to appoint him as a Senior Superior Court Judge, allowing him to continue serving the circuit and the state as needed.
Sams closed his letter by extending “utmost respect and appreciation” to the governor.
