Peachtree City Police are investigating a case of porch piracy after Ring camera footage showed a woman teaching a young girl how to steal packages in the Everton subdivision.
The video footage shows the adult having her “junior associate” retrieve and carry the package from the doorstep.
While some online speculated that the incident involved a misdelivered package, Lieutenant Christopher Hyatt confirmed this was a criminal theft.
“The package was delivered to the correct address and was taken less than an hour later,” Lt. Hyatt said.
Police say porch thefts are rising with the increase in online shopping and home deliveries. Fortunately, securities cameras are able to help in both prevention and investigation.
“One of the most effective tools is the use of motion-activated security cameras. In this case, footage captured by a home camera system played a critical role in documenting the crime and will assist in investigation,” Lt. Hyatt said .
With motion-sensing cameras that send real-time alerts, homeowners can quickly respond if suspicious activity is occurring. With high-value items, it is critical to be extra careful of the delivery process.
“For high-value deliveries such as phones, electronics, or other expensive items, we strongly recommend requiring a signature upon delivery or having the package routed to a secure pickup location or locker,” said Lt. Hyatt.
Police also suggest coordinating with a trusted neighbor or friend to retrieve the package if the high-value item is scheduled to be delivered when you are not at home.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone nearby that may have captured additional footage during the time frame of 12:30 p.m. and 1:15 p.m. on Friday, July 18 are asked to reach out to Detective Michelle Taylor at [email protected] or leave a tip at 770-487-6010.
