The Fayette County NAACP and the Fayette County Historical Society will host a Juneteenth Parade and celebration on Thursday, June 19, at the Old Fayette County Courthouse from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The event honors Juneteenth, which commemorates the official emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. The celebration will include guest speakers, food, games, African dancing, gospel choirs, Black-owned businesses, and more.

Kevin Pratt II, the president and spokesperson of Fayette County’s NAACP chapter, expressed his gratitude for the community’s support and spirit in celebrating this important chapter in American history.

“Fayette County is a gem in itself,” said Pratt. “We are more of a family, so when things happen in Fayette County people come out.”

This year’s guest speakers include:

  • Award-winning journalist Donna Lowry
  • Bishop Leon Stanley of Heaven Bound Church
  • Professional golfer Oneda Maryon Castillo
  • Senator Kenya Wicks of Georgia’s 34th District
  • Reverend Ed Johnson, Mayor of Fayetteville

Events like the Juneteenth Parade reflect the values of both the local and national NAACP in striving to ensure that all voices-especially those historically underrepresented- are heard and celebrated.

“It’s all about celebrating our achievements and recognizing how far we have come but not losing sight of how far we have to go,” said Pratt.

Pratt encourages everyone to attend the celebration and take the opportunity to learn more about the holiday’s significance.

“I think the most important thing is that people learn one thing,” he added. “Whether you agree or disagree, if you are making the conscious decision to understand it, that’s the most important thing.  To learn more about the Fayette County NAACP chapter and upcoming events visit the Fayette County NAACP Branch Facebook page.  The chapter also hosts general meetings the first Saturday of each month, which are open to the public to attend.
