Peeples Elementary kindergarteners learned that the joy of reading a new story can be quite delicious on Bakery Day.

To celebrate Read Across America Day, the young Rockets “baked” their way through various genres: Fiction, nonfiction, fairy tale, biography, and tall tales. They welcomed parents into the classroom as Mystery Readers to share stories throughout the day in the different categories.

The activity helped the young readers stretch beyond just fiction and nonfiction as they “taste-tested the flavors” of reading. After being introduced to each genre, students created a cupcake to add to their “baking sheet.” On the cupcake, they drew what they remembered from the story. At the end of the day, students were asked to decide on their favorite genre.
