The Senoia Area Historical Society’s February Monthly Program will feature author Allan C. Payton, the author of a civil war story, “1,417 Days in Rebellion:A History of the 19th Georgia Regiment”.
As a lover of United States history, Payton decided to make a commitment to find out more about his ancestor, John. Bunyan Samples. J. B. Samples was Payton’s paternal great-great grandfather. According to family lore, Samples was a struggling one-legged farmer in Georgia. Payton’s research about his ancestor led him to an amazing story of the 19th Georgia Regiment.
The Civil War is one of the greatest tragedies ever experienced by our nation. The repercussions of the war are still alive today, almost 160 years after the final shots were fired in April 1865. Many books have been written on the battles, the campaigns, and strategic troop movements. “1,417 Days in Rebellion: A History of the 19th Georgia Regiment” provides a view of the war from one regiment.
Readers of Payton’s book follow the 19th Georgia regiment from formation and training at Big Shanty, now Kennesaw, Georgia, to the final surrender near Durham Station, North Carolina. From as far north as Sharpsburg, Maryland, to the sandy soil of north central Florida, the 19th Georgia was in every major battle fought by the Army of Northern Virginia, except Gettysburg, Spotsylvania, and The Wilderness.
Mr. Payton will discuss his book and the story told within at the February monthly meeting of the Senoia Area Historical Society. Payton will have copies of “1,417 Days in Rebellion” available for purchase and autographing by the author.
The public is invited to attend the February program on Thursday, February 13th. The museum doors will open at 6:30 PM for light refreshments and museum touring, the program will start at 7:00 P.M.
