Joyce Marie Larson, born on April 3, 1950, in Providence, Rhode Island, passed away peacefully on December 11, 2024, in Peachtree City, Georgia, at the age of 74. An extraordinary woman whose life was a testament to love, dedication, and resilience, Joyce graced every room with her presence and left an indelible mark on all who knew her.
Joyce’s journey was shaped by her rich experiences as a Navy Brat, where she developed an adventurous spirit and a profound adaptability through her family’s many travels. That same spirit followed her into adulthood as she became an Army wife, continuing to embrace life’s changes (15 moves in 30 years) with grace and optimism. Joyce’s heart was anchored by her family, with whom she cherished every moment and created countless treasured memories.
A natural educator, Joyce found her calling as a teacher, in Virginia, Alabama, Germany and Rhode Island before moving to Georgia. She taught for 11 years with the Fayette County Board of Education, where she inspired countless students with her passion for learning and encouragement. From 2005 to 2008, she further extended her mentorship by coaching the Stars Mill Swim Team, guiding them not only in sport but in life, imbuing each with confidence and skill.
Joyce’s love for swimming saw her compete as a master swimmer on a national level, where she demonstrated remarkable prowess, winning accolades and serving as an inspiration to all those dedicated to sporting excellence.
Her unwavering commitment to nurturing young minds extended beyond the classroom. As a Girl Scout leader, Joyce was a beacon of leadership and kindness, fostering a sense of community and empowerment among the youth.
Joyce is preceded in death by her beloved parents, Frank and Charlotte Pennington. Her legacy lives on through her devoted husband, COL(R) Scott Larson; her loving daughters Leslie Jane (Christopher) Church and Sarah (Joseph) Ivey; and her cherished grandchildren Jacqueline, Grayson, and Caspian. She also leaves behind her dear siblings, Nancy Pennington and Bill Pennington, along with extended family and a host of friends who cherished her deeply.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at the Chapel of Mowell Funeral Home, Peachtree City. Joyce will be interred in the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery at a later date.
