GBI investigates officer involved shooting fatality in Sharpsburg

Sharpsburg, Coweta County, GA (November 23, 2023) — The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in Sharpsburg, Coweta County, Georgia.

The Coweta County Sheriff’s Office asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on November 22, 2023.

One man, identified as Dustin Allen Phillips, age 34, of Sharpsburg, GA, was shot and killed. No deputies were injured in this incident.

The preliminary information indicates on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, at about 9:30 p.m., Coweta County deputies responded to a home on Halo Trace searching for Phillips.

Phillips was wanted by authorities on a murder warrant. Phillips allegedly shot and killed his estranged wife the previous day during a domestic dispute near the same area on Halo Trace.

When deputies arrived at the home, they saw Phillips, who ran away. Deputies ran after him. Phillips pointed a handgun at deputies and fired several times.

Deputies subsequently fired their weapons, hitting Phillips multiple times. Deputies rendered first aid. Phillips died on scene.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once complete, the case file will be given to the Coweta Judicial Circuit District Attorney s Office for review.
