On Peachtree City’s south border, a big change is afoot for the intersection of Ga. Highway 74 South and Ga. Highway 85. The Fayette County Commission is being asked to approve rezoning 12.6 acres on the southwest side of the intersection for a gas-station-convenience store with retail tenant space.
If approved, the rezoning will mark the first new commercial development for that intersection to the south of Peachtree City in multiple decades.
Also on the agenda at its Dec. 8 meeting, the commission will consider rezoning to allow the first new construction in more than three decades at the busy intersection of Ga. Highway 54 with Tyrone Road in the center of the county. It includes a proposed drive-through restaurant, the first such business in the unincorporated stretch of Hwy. 54 between Fayetteville and Peachtree City
The developer is asking for rezoning on 4 tracts totaling 9.9 acres fronting on Ga. Highway 74 and Tyrone Road and situated in the northwest corner of the intersection directly across from Marnelle Mobile Home Park.
The purpose will be “to develop a multi-use commercial center, including a convenience store with fuel, tunnel car wash, interior access self-storage and a quick-serve restaurant with drive-through,” according to county documents.
The rezoning request received recommendations for approval from both the Fayette County Planning Commission and county planning staff.
In a third rezoning request, the county is being asked to rezone a 13-acre undeveloped tract on Ga. Highway 85 North near its intersection with Corinth Road from office-institutional uses to commercial highway uses to allow construction of a “truck parking facility.”
The Planning Commission voted 4-to-0 against the idea while county staff recommended a conditional approval. The site is not far from the Fun Spot outdoor entertainment center.
Another rezoning and another self-storage facility is proposed for a 9-acre tract on Hwy. 54 East just north of McDonough Road and just beyond McCurry Park recreation area. The planning commission on Nov. 3 voted 3-to-1 to recommend denial of the A-R to C-H request that would allow a 3-story building. Staff also said the request should be denied.
The commission will be meeting Thursday in mid-afternoon — 2 p.m. on Dec. 8 — at the county administrative center in Fayetteville. It’s a full agenda also — 25 items as seen below.

ADJOURNMENT:
No No No to the rezoning of the 74 -85 until the state widens GA 85, it is already dangerous for the folks on the connector and rising starr. The DOT putting in the little pass lane made it even worse.
How many self-storage units are needed in Fayetteville? Very sad to see how beautiful land and trees are being removed around Fayetteville for strip malls and self-storage units.
I agree. Perhaps one unobtrusive area could be designated for this purpose- with allowance for adding on with approval from the county. However, having these storage units all over the county is quite an unwelcome eyesore.
