Learning and fun were manufactured at Huddleston Elementary with a tasty activity. Students in the 5th grade classes of Allyson Merchant and Paula Nellessen learned about production and assembly lines with a Henry Ford “Candy” Car build.

Learning about Henry Ford’s assembly line first-hand by working together to make candy Model T cars, they saw how specializing in a skill promotes a faster assembly line, which leads to lower prices. Each candy car consisted of 9 pieces of candy, including peppermint wheels, a Lifesaver steering wheel, and a gum stick frame, and every student was needed to put them together quickly and correctly.

“We hope that students experience the efficiency and effectiveness of the assembly line and specialization,” said Merchant. “Students leave the classroom understanding just how impactful the assembly line process was on the American economy.”
