Building the foundations of learning, students in Eileen Corley’s 3rd grade class at Sara Harp Minter Elementary teamed up to build towering towers of cups.

The class had been studying the scientific method, and they put it to use. They collaborated on the project, first coming up with a hypothesis to decide how to best build the tower, then they experimented to see what would work before concluding how to start their build.

Teams learned that a strong base was key for their towers to stay upright.

“I used this opportunity to explain to the students that they must have a strong foundation in science in 3rd grade in order to move forward in science in the future,” said Corley. “The students loved working together and learned that science is everywhere around us, even using something as simple as plastic cups.”
