Flat Rock students compete in podcast challenge

The Eagles are getting their wings as budding media personalities. Flat Rock Middle students in Nateil Carby’s STEAM class competed in the NPR Student Podcast Challenge, earning Honorable Mention recognition among the 2,400 entries nationwide.

The NPR Student Podcast Challenge charges students with creating a podcast about something they care about. Plenty of prompts were offered to get the creative juices flowing, like telling a story about your school or community, what is a historical moment all people should learn about, and what you want to change about the world. Each podcast had to be between 3 and 8 minutes long.

Students in Carby’s class put a lot of work into their finished products. During their literacy periods over a span of 5 to 6 weeks, they planned their podcasts, storyboarded, wrote scripts, rehearsed, recorded, and revised.

Participating students were Jacob Allen, Shater Gemade, Daya Janz, Zay’Aonna Johnson, Brycen McDaniel, Yashwin Ramesh-Babu, Abraham Rendon, and Lincoln Thompson.

Their potential was recognized with Honorable Mention awards, meaning they were top 40 in the middle school category.
