The community at Sara Harp Minter is committed to learning together. The 1st graders teamed up to assemble a mural dedicated to African-American heroes for Black History Month.

Students from each of the six 1st grade classrooms contributed pieces to the mural.

“Being a Leader In Me school, this creative and abstract mural gave us a chance to work together as a grade level to implement habit 6 – synergize,” said teacher Chris Messer.

The finished product was a beautiful tribute hanging in the hallway for the whole school to admire. The mural features 8 influential figures in black history: Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, Ruby Bridges, George Washington Carver, Jackie Robinson, Harriet Tubman, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, and President Barack Obama.

“Our goal was for students to learn something new about several influential African Americans that span over different generations who were trailblazers,” said Messer. “They were proud to see it in the hall!”
