Eight Fayette County middle school students (photos below) have started their college education early after receiving a $10,000 REACH Georgia Scholarship.

Quentin Lunderman and Alexis Vo of Flat Rock Middle; Ansiba Bakaly, James Ellison, Jr., and Yen Chen (Nina) Huang of Rising Starr Middle; and Adefolake Adewusi, Mollie Betsill, and Destiny Cameron of Whitewater Middle signed their letters of commitment at the second annual REACH Georgia signing ceremony.

These students pledged to meet academic and attendance requirements, meet with their academic coaches, and remain crime, drug, and behavior issue free. Parents and guardians also signed contracts to support these efforts. In addition, community members, REACH coordinators, volunteer mentors, and academic coaches commit their time and energy to helping these students achieve educational success.

Community volunteers, school administration, family members, business and church organizations attended the event to show their support for these students and their future.

They are the second group from Fayette County Public Schools to receive college scholarships from REACH Georgia.

REACH Georgia is the state of Georgia’s first needs-based mentorship and college scholarship program. The mission is to ensure that Georgia’s academically promising students have the academic, social, and financial support needed to graduate from high school, access college and achieve postsecondary success.

For the upcoming school year and years to come, the school system is seeking donations from business and community members to fund half the cost ($5,000) of each scholarship. These donations will be made through the Fayette County Education Foundation, a nonprofit 501 (c) 3 organization that solely supports Fayette County Public Schools. The contributions will support the continued education for our student’s successful futures.

All donations are tax deductible. For more information about donating to this program through the foundation, contact treasurer Melinda Berry-Dreisbach via email at berrydreisbach.melinda@mail.fcboe.org or call 770-460-3535.

Donations in the form of checks or money orders can be mailed to Melinda Berry-Dreisbach, Fayette County Board of Education, 205 LaFayette Avenue, Fayetteville, Georgia 30214. Please indicate on the check or money order that the donation is for the REACH Georgia Scholarship.
