Fayette’s Jan Kirkland-Cochran making tennis world headlines in the over-65 age groups

Fayetteville, Ga.’s Jan Kirkland-Cochran just returned from Umag, Croatia, where she represented the U.S. in the Kitty Godfree Cup at the 39th Super Seniors World Tennis Championships.

Jan along with her fellow teammates defeated Germany in the 65 & over team finals 3-0 to win gold.

More than 540 players aged 65 & over, competed in five-year age groups through 85 & over from around the globe. Team competition involved 134 teams from 34 countries competing for 10 different cups.

The first week of competition, players represent their national teams before lining up to compete for individual honors the second week where 550 participants from 54 countries competed.

Jan teamed up with her tennis partner Tina Karwasky from California and won silver in the individual event.

Jan and Tina are currently ranked #1 in the U.S. in the 65 & over division. They won the Gold Slam in 2018,winning all four Nationals on four different surfaces.

Earlier this year Jan Kirkland-Cochran was honored by the Southern Tennis Association, which presented her with the Slew Hester Female Player of the Year Award. Jan was recently selected by USTA Georgia to be featured on their website in the category called Adult Player Spotlight.
