The Fayette County Public Library and Southern Conservation Trust are collaborating on a project to bring together literacy and the outdoors. The two organizations are co- hosting a picture book walk, featuring the book “Daniel Finds a Poem” by Micha Archer, at the Ridge Nature Area in Fayetteville. The interactive experience will be available from September 22 to October 20.

A picture book walk involves taking apart a picture book, laminating the pages and mounting them on posts that are placed along a trail where young children and their parents can walk and read the story together. The idea for Picture Book Walks goes back more than a decade, to when a retired librarian in Vermont decided she wanted to provide her community with a way to read and get moving outside. .

Another opportunity for families to participate together will be activity cards with ideas for ways for children to explore nature with their families. Everyone who completes the card will receive a refrigerator magnet commemorating the Fayette County Public Library’s first picture book walk. One of the featured family activities involves contributing to a community poem that will be presented at the program finale at the library on October 20.
