Joseph “Joe” H. Estes, 98, of Fayetteville died on Thursday, September 20, 2018.
He was born on January 13, 1920 in Luthersville, Ga. to Mary and Atley Estes. He served in the US Navy during World War II. He was employed by Norfolk Southern Corporation in Roanoke, Va., in the Law Department for 38 years until his retirement in 1985. He received his Bachelor and Master of Laws from Atlanta Law School.
Joe was very active in the Gideons International for over 50 years. He was active and involved in the Azalea Estates Assisted Living Community for the last 8 years.
Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Foster Estes. He is survived by his son, Joseph Atley Estes of Fayetteville, Ga.; his daughters, Judith Merritt of Senoia, Ga. and Bonnie Martin of Senoia, Ga.; eight grandchildren, Joseph, Jason, Josh, Ashley, Stacy, Hunter, Lauren, and Mallory; seven great grandchildren, Caleb, Alex, Amber, Olivia, Saylah, Sadie, and John David; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, September 25, 2018 at the Fayetteville First Baptist Church, Overton Chapel, with Rev. Glenn Stringham and Rev. Jack Miller officiating. Joe will lay in state at the church from 10 – 11 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow at New Hope Cemetery, 7719 Callaway Road, Greenville, Ga. 30222. The family will receive friends on Monday, September 24, 2018 from 4-7 p.m. at Mowell Funeral Home, Fayetteville.
