A non-voting work session item at the July 24 meeting of the Fayetteville Planning and Zoning Commission included a potential proposal to establish the Awkward Brewing craft beer facility on Lee Street across from City Hall.

Owners Andrew and Amanda Poliak are requesting that the residentially-zoned property at 240 and 250 Lee Street be rezoned commercial to accommodate the proposed brewery and tasting facility.

Andrew Poliak is employed in Peachtree City, while Amanda Poliak had experience in the craft beer business in Washington state.

Andrew Poliak described the facility as an outdoor/indoor space dedicated to a family environment where patrons can socialize and sample locally-crafted beer. The location will have outdoor areas for seating, games and recreation and will feature a tasting room with the ability to make take-out purchases.

The applicants said the potential idea for the property that contains two homes on Lee Street and several outbuildings would be to keep the large house for residential or office purposes and to demolish and concret block house.

One of the outbuilding would be transformed into the brewery and tasting area and would be outfitted with a patio and other accommodations, they said.

Properties on Lee Street include homes on the east side and a combination of homes converted for office use, City Hall and the fire department on the west side.

Planning staff will check on the proximity to the nearby church and conformity with state law. Staff will also work with the applicants prior to the item returning to the commission for a vote.

The applicants said they were directed to the Lee Street site by representatives of the Fayetteville Downtown Development Authority.
