Marian Payne McWhorter Fowler (Madge), 100, of Fayetteville died January 24, 2018.
She was born Oct. 16, 1917, in Atlanta, the youngest child of John Allen and Sarah Jane Payne McWhorter. She grew up in East Point, graduated from Russell High in 1935, and attended Draughan Business School in Atlanta. She worked all her life in the insurance industry, retiring from Longino & Smith Insurance Agency in College Park in 1983.
In 1935, she married William J. (Dub) Fowler and they had three children, Judy, Kay and Bill. They both became avid golfers and could be found any weekend on the fairways at Meadowbrook Country Club and later at Lakeside Country Club. They moved to Tyrone in 1971 and joined Flat Creek Country Club. Madge continued golfing well into her 90s, and even boasted a hole-in-one at a business tournament in Florida in the 1980s.
In 1975, following Dub’s death, Madge joined Christ Our Shepherd Lutheran Church, then a new church in Peachtree City which met in a warehouse on Dividend Drive. From then until now, John Weber has been one of her dearest friends and was a constant visitor during her last year.
After retirement, Madge continued her various hobbies including gardening, sewing, painting, needlepoint, embroidery, crocheting, and quilting.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her son, William J. Fowler Jr.; her daughter, Kay Fowler Polk; and her sisters, Faye Barron and Gladys McDuffie. She is survived by her daughter, Judy Fowler Kilgore of Newnan; grandchildren, Davida Kilgore of Newnan; Kelly Pinholster of Williamson; Jason Polk of Fayetteville; Justin Polk of Atlanta; Marc Fowler of Marietta; nieces, Beryl Barron Smith (Mike) of Concord, N.C.; Laura McDuffie Foust (Tom) of East Point; Marilyn Fowler Peacock of Draper, Utah; Becky Hancock Foster (Don) of Bell, Fla.; nephews, George L. Barron Jr. (Janie) of Tyrone; Denny McDuffie (Willene) of Michigan; Jay McDuffie (Susan), of Brooks; ten great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, and special friend and caregiver, Lane Vickery of Fayetteville.
The Rev. Miriam Beecher will officiate at a graveside service and interment to be held Thursday, February 1, at 2 p.m., at Sharon Memorial Gardens in Tyrone.
Carl J. Mowell & Son Funeral Home, Peachtree City will be handling the arrangements. Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of donations to the Stephen’s Ministry at Christ Our Shepherd Lutheran Church, 101 N. Peachtree Pkwy., Peachtree City, Ga. 30269. The family invites friends to join them at a gathering at Due South Restaurant in Peachtree City following the service.
