David “Mike” Hemperley of Fayetteville lost his courageous battle with leukemia on December 22, 2017.

Mike was born to Harry and Mary Hemperley on September 18, 1935. He was a proud graduate of Campbell High School, Class of 1955. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served his country on the high seas, sailing on the USS WASP.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. M.O. Hemperley; and nephew, Coy Cowen. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Barbara Rainwater Hemperley; sons, Michael (Sherry) of Portsmouth, Va., Mark (Effie), and Mitch (Ilona), both of Fayetteville, Ga.; four grandsons; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Mildred Hardy of Grandbury, Texas and Evelyn (Harry) Harris of San Antonio, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Mike’s caretakers, Artie and Sharmaine, for their love and compassion during this difficult time. A private family celebration of Mike’s life will be held at a later date. The family lovingly requests that memorial contributions be made to Healing 4 Heros, www.healing4heros.org.
