An Aug. 17 vote by the Tyrone Town Council is expected to lead to an expansion of the amenities at Handley Park.

The council voted unanimously to purchase an adjacent 40-acre parcel for $300,000, said Mayor Eric Dial.

“We were presented with the opportunity to purchase the property at a fair price and we all felt like it was a no-brainer, based on the price and the potential use of the property by other buyers,” said Dial.

The 40-acre property, which includes a pond, is situated behind the area along Handley Road used for parking, and immediately south of the ball fields and areas used for the fair and Founders Day events.

While there is no current need for additional ball fields and the future use for the park property has not yet been determined, Dial said the 40-acre acquisition could serve as a linear park or for a disk golf course.
