Ten culinary students from the Fayette County School System’s Center of Innovation won $1,000 scholarships at the 2017 Hospitality Career Expo hosted by the Hospitality Education Foundation of Georgia.
Twenty-five culinary pathway students from high schools across the county attended the 13th annual expo held at the Georgia International Convention Center. The expo is a marketing show designed to educate high school students on the vast career paths in the restaurant and hospitality industry. Nearly 3,000 high school students and teachers from throughout the state attended.
The centerpiece of the expo was a management competition called Expo-opoly where students had the opportunity to earn scholarships for demonstrated learning of business practices such as accounting, franchising, and human resources. Fayette students who won $1,000 scholarships are Alison Cappas, McIntosh High; Kayla Lott, Fayette County High; Gabriela Cortes, Fayette County High; Mekisa Simmons, Fayette County High; Sydney Sears, Fayette County High; Alliyah Smith, Fayette County High; Tyler Carter, Fayette County High; Courteney Dorcena, Fayette County High; Teylor Whiting, Fayette County High; and Y’Lexis Chatman, Fayette County High.
While at the expo, students interacted with professionals from nearly 100 corporations such as Gas South, Zaxby’s, Sysco and US Foods. They learned about the various facets of the restaurant and hospitality industry from production, to distribution, and marketing.
