U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Dennis Hollimon, a Purple Heart recipient, along with his family, was welcomed into their mortgage-free home in Newnan on Dec. 2.
“The home has been modified to fit the needs of Staff Sgt. Hollimon and his family,” said Leika Drouillard on behalf of the organization, adding that the house was modified to meet the wounded veteran’s needs.
Staff Sgt. Hollimon served in the military for more than 10 years, including deployment in Iraq and Afghanistan. It was in 2009 when Staff Sergeant Hollimon and his convoy was ambushed by gunfire and rocket-propelled grenades. He took a direct hit that removed his left arm, and would later require a full amputation. He also suffers from PTSD and a traumatic brain injury, Drouillard said.
Building Homes for Heroes, a national nonprofit organization that builds and modifies homes, and gifts them mortgage-free to wounded veterans and their families. Building Homes for Heroes hosted a Welcome Home Ceremony for Hollimon his wife Apris and their two children, said Drouillard.
Counting nine consecutive years of record-setting growth, Building Homes for Heroes builds and gifts mortgage-free homes, and completes home modifications, for veterans and their families and provides further services along their road to recovery to help them live a promising and fulfilling life ahead, according to the organization.
Building Homes for Heroes is committed to rebuilding lives and supporting the brave men and women who were injured while serving the country after Sept. 11, 2001, during the time of the wars in Iraq or Afghanistan.
After gifting 28 homes in 2015, Building Homes for Heroes has its sights set on gifting 36 homes in 2016, equal to one home every 10 days.
