Unverified students down to under 2%
The number of children attending Fayette County schools without having their residency verified continues to decrease. School system data on Oct. 31 showed 316 students still unverified. That’s about 1.5 percent of total school enrollment.
Student Services Director Audrey Toney at the Oct. 31 work session updated the school board on the most recent tally of students still not verified to live in Fayette. As of Oct. 31 that number was 316 students.
It was two weeks ago that 533 students had not had their residency verified.
Superintendent Jody Barrow on Oct. 17 said the “day of reckoning” was approaching for those whose residency could not be verified.
Noting what he expressed in a cabinet meeting earlier that day, Barrow told board members the school system is at the point of making a decision on students whose residency cannot be verified. That date is Dec. 16, Barrow said, adding that by the end of the semester the school system is looking to potentially begin withdrawing students.
Toney and school system staff continue to attempt to verify all students whose residency is still in question.
The school board earlier in the year instructed the school system to verify residency. It is the first time since 2011 that a mandatory residency check had been conducted. Some on the board have suggested that residency checks be conducted each year.
