Award-winning Georgia author and Doc Holliday authority Victoria Wilcox will present “Gone With the Wind Goes West” sponsored by the Butts County Historical Society Thursday, June 23, at 7 p.m.

Holliday, who was born and raised in Griffin, actually has a connection to Butts County. His foster brother, Francisco Hidalgo, resided in Jenkinsville where Doc would visit him. Doc also has a connection to GWTW.

Wilcox researched Holliday for 18 years after founding the Holliday-Dorsey-Fife Museum in Fayetteville. Doc Holliday is the subject of her popular historical fiction trilogy, Southern Son: The Saga of Doc Holliday (Knox Robinson Publishing). Born in Griffin in the last days before the Civil War with family ties to “Gone With The Wind” author Margaret Mitchell, Doc Holliday’s story sweeps from the cotton plantations of Georgia to the cattle country and silver boomtowns of the American West. It’s an epic tale of heroes and villains, dreams lost and found, families broken and reconciled, of sin and recompense and the redeeming power of love.

Known for uncovering the real story about Doc Holliday, Wilcox has lectured around the country and appeared on NPR and television programs such as the Fox Network’s “Legends & Lies: The Real West.” She was recently chosen the Best Historical Western Novelist of 2016 by True West magazine. Past winners include Larry McMurtry, author of Lonesome Dove.

Wilcox has been honored twice by the Georgia Writers Association for her Southern Son books. In 2014, she was awarded a Georgia Author of the Year Award for Inheritance, the first book in the trilogy. Gone West, the second book of the saga, received a silver medal in 2015. The third book, The Last Decision, was released in May 2015 and has been nominated for a third Georgia Author of the Year Award.

The talk will be held at the Daughtry Foundation Building at 221 E. College Street, Jackson, Ga. Admission is free and open to the public. Copies of the author’s books will be available for purchase and signing after the talk. For event information, call 770-775-3313.
