Good story, bad headline last week

[Monroe Roark,] I would like to commend you for your comprehensive, well-balanced, thoughtful article in yesterday’s The Citizen re: those of us who spoke at the Dec. 10, 2015, Fayette Board of Commissioners meeting, voicing our support for displaying “Under Many, One” — or any other inclusive slogan — in the Commission chambers, rather than displaying “In God We Trust.”

Your objectivity throughout the article itself reflects either an innate ability on your part to report fairly, or someone has taught you well. In either case, The Citizen is fortunate to have you on staff.

My only concern was the headline: “Atheists …” Six of us spoke either in favor of displaying only an inclusive statement in the commission chambers and/or objecting to “In God We Trust,” and only two of the six of us identified as either atheist or agnostic.

I am not sure why we all got labeled as atheists. Were you assuming that only agnostics or atheists would object to displaying “In God We Trust” in the commission chambers?

If so, that is not true. (Witness Commissioner Rousseau who says he is a man of faith, yet he favors displaying no slogans in the commission chambers.) Please explain why you would choose to label all of us as atheists.

Other than a potentially misleading headline, you captured the essence of our comments beautifully. Thank you.
