Sharpsburg resident and Eagle Scout Sean McCarthy has his mind set on providing work on soil and water conservation issues at the Line Creek Nature Area in Peachtree City.
The extensive project is expected to lead to McCarthy receiving the Hornaday Silver Medal, scouting’s most difficult and coveted award.
McCarthy is leading fellow scouts and friends in the project at Line Creek Nature Area off Ga. Highway 54 in Peachtree City. The project deals with a number of needed soil and water conservation service issues.
“His project will be dealing with the mitigation of unauthorized trails, improving trails, controlling soil erosion, building water-bars and updating the trail markers and the map of the trails,” said Jim McCarthy, Sean’s father.
Sean is an Eagle Scout with 13 Eagle Palms, a Junior Assistant Scoutmaster, a Leave No Trace Trainer, a Wilderness First-Aid Responder and is a recipient of the BSA National Medal for Outdoor Achievement. He is currently completing his 100th merit badge and last year received the Presidential Award for Environment Stewardship.
Advising McCarthy on the project are Flint River Council conservation advisor Keith Larson, Southern Conservation Trust Director Pam Young and retired U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologist Dennis Chase.
