I would like to inform your readers about the fact of the congestion of traffic at North Fayette Elementary School. The school is located at 609 Kenwood Rd in the northern part of Fayette County.
Because of the recent elementary school closing in Fayette County, more students are attending North Fayette and this has added to the school zone congestion. With more students attending the school there has been an increase in the student drop-offs by the parents.
The line of cars has gotten larger and now the cars are lined up down the Kenwood Drive. The line of cars blocks the lane of traffic. Parents have been trying to get to the school faster to beat the rush of other parents that are also trying drop off their children to school. Drivers are speeding in order to either drop their children off or just get through the area.
The congestion is amplified by the school buses leaving North Fayette on the middle school and high school routes. Kenwood Drive only has one lane of traffic per direction. The school has no left turn lane so stops up that lane of traffic. Kenwood Drive [is a] major short-cut for the northern part of the county. A lot of the morning commuters use Kenwood Drive the same time as the parents are dropping off their children.
The congestion has led to traffic accidents this school year as well as near misses. Drivers are crossing the center line into oncoming vehicles. Also, [they are] are driving in the grass to get around cars. I would like the county government to look into this problem.
