Two students from East Coweta High School have received a different type of recognition by being named to the State Superintendent Richard Wood’s 2015-16 Student Advisory Council.

School system spokesman Dean Jackson in a Sept. 11 announcement said senior Jasmine Guy and sophomore Jaden Stutzman were two of 110 students selected statewide Woods to serve on the council.

The two students were chosen from more than 1,500 middle and high school students from across the state who submitted applications and essays for the positions,”Jackson said.

“Jasmine and Jaden are both great, dedicated students who will represent our county very well,” said East Coweta Principal Steve Allen. Guy, a 12th grader, serves on ECHS’s senior advisory committee for Principal Allen. Stutzman is a 10th grader who is a part of the EC Marching Indians band program.

The students selected will meet with Superintendent Woods to discuss the impact of state policies in the classroom. Members of the Student Advisory Council will also discuss other issues related to education, and will serve as the Superintendent’s ambassadors to their respective schools and school systems.

“Students feel the impact of our decisions every day,” Woods said. “If we are going to develop child-focused, classroom-centered policies, we must hear directly from students. We can only improve their educational experience by bringing them to the table.”

The Georgia Department of Education said that the students selected were chosen based on the strength of their essays, which focused on their ideas for public education and ways their own educational experience could be improved.

“It was refreshing and valuable to hear feedback from these students, as well as their ideas for education in Georgia,” said Woods. “This is a great group of students with smart, varied ideas for the future of our educational system. I look forward to working with them and I’d like to thank every student who took the time to apply and share his or her thoughts.”
