A Fayette County man was robbed at gunpoint Tuesday night in the parking lot of the Kroger grocery store on Ga. Highway 85 South in Fayetteville.
Fayetteville Police Department spokesman Mike Whitlow said officers received the armed robbery call for the parking lot at the Kroger store on Hwy. 85 South at 8:13 p.m.
The victim, owner of a convenience store in Conyers who was on his way home, told officers he was loading groceries in his vehicle when he was approached by a black male in his 20s wearing a black long-sleeve shirt, khaki shorts and green underwear, Whitlow said.
The suspect pointed a handgun at the victim and told him to turn over the store’s money, Whitlow said, adding that the victim said he did not have the store’s money.
Whitlow said the suspect ordered the victim inside the vehicle and told him to keep his head down. The suspect then searched the vehicle but found no money and subsequently ordered the victim to give him his wallet and cell phone, Whitlow said.
The suspect dropped the cell phone as he exited the vehicle and ran into the tree line behind the grocery store, said Whitlow. The wallet contained the victim’s credit cards and identification and approximately $200 in cash. The victim was not injured in the robbery, Whitlow added.
Fayetteville officers and Fayette County Sheriff’s deputies on the scene searched the area but could not locate the suspect. Fayetteville detectives viewed area surveillance videos and interviewed several witnesses to the robbery, Whitlow said.
Though the victim said he did not believe he was followed from work, detectives will be viewing videos from the convenience store in Conyers, said Whitlow.
