Statewide recognition keeps coming for Sally Meyer, a teacher of math and social studies at Crabapple Lane Elementary.
Meyer has received two statewide honors for 2015. The latest is from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History that named her the 2015 Georgia History Teacher of the Year. In April, the Georgia Council on Economic Education named her the 2015 Georgia Economics Teacher of the Year.
“The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History is honored to celebrate the outstanding work that you do in the classroom. We are proud to recognize you for your commitment to the study and love of American history,” said Tiffany Frarey, national teacher of the year coordinator with the Lehrman Institute, in a congratulatory letter to Meyer.
As Georgia’s History Teacher of the Year, Meyer will receive a $1,000 award, certificate of recognition, an archive of books and historical resources presented in her name to Crabapple Lane’s media center, and an invitation to attend a 2016 Gilder Lehrman Teacher Seminar.
Meyer is one of 53 finalists vying for the National History Teacher of the Year title, which includes a $10,000 award. The winner of the national competition will be announced in the fall.
Her award also brings benefits to other teachers at the school. Crabapple Lane will be named a Gilder Lehrman Affiliate School giving teachers access to invitations to regional forums with noted historians, access to an exclusive section of the institute’s website with extensive teacher resources such as lesson plans, toolkits, and primary source documents to use in the classroom, priority access to teacher seminars and traveling exhibitions, discounts to the institute’s online store, and free mailings of classroom materials.
