The Fayette County Board of Education on May 18 added an extra layer of security at the school system’s elementary schools by approving a $141,700 bid to purchase and install security cameras in the front and rear areas of each school.

The unanimous vote came after a brief discussion where Deputy Superintendent Sam Sweat noted that elementary schools do not have school resource officers — in other words, no armed police or deputies on site.

The six bids received by the school system came after Safety Coordinator Steve Greene in the fall had requested that the purchasing department assist with obtaining the bids.

The $141,708 bid by Ultimate Security was the lowest of the six bids received.
