Meals on Wheel of Coweta is participating in the 2015 March for Meals – a nationwide community-by-community celebration of Meals on Wheels programs that help elder adults live independently in their own homes.
March for Meals is a national campaign held annually during the month of March, initiated and sponsored by the Meals on Wheels Association of America to raise awareness of the struggles faced by aging neighbors and to encourage action on the part of local communities.
In Coweta, the Meals on Wheels group helps elder adults remain healthy and safe in their own homes by providing nutritious meals; performs simple home repairs, and makes friendly visits at no cost to clients. Meals on Wheels of Coweta currently serves 1200 meals per month to 65 clients on routes in Newnan, Sharpsburg, Senoia, and Moreland.
Clients must be homebound, ill or disabled, and unable to prepare meals for themselves.
Meals on Wheels receives no financial support from any city, county, or state government and depends on grants, donations, and fundraisers to serve clients. Nearly 2,000 elder Coweta citizens don’t have enough to eat and at least 300 of these individuals need home delivered meals now. Meals on Wheels of Coweta needs more volunteers and more donations to serve more of these older adults in need.
The organization suggests several ways people can help Meals on Wheels — volunteer time, make a financial donation or sponsor a fundraising event, speak out to elected officials on behalf of the organization or partner with Meals on Wheels.
Hundreds of elder nutrition programs across the United States, like Meals on Wheels of Coweta, promote March for Meals through public events, partnerships with local businesses, volunteer recruitment and fundraising initiatives.
