Wrestlers hit the mat at state

A number of local wrestlers brought home medals from the weekend’s traditional state championship meet at the Macon Coliseum.

The top finishers in AAAA were Jake Lee of Sandy Creek (106) and Kershon Manciel of Fayette County (152), who each came in third. Lee’s final opponent was Fayette County’s Jacob Taylor, who placed fourth, as did Whitewater’s Logan Wesolowski (138) and Cole Baxter (170).

In the final AAAA team scores, Whitewater had 40.0 points (tied for 13th) while Fayette County tallied 34.5 (19th) and Sandy Creek had 20.0 (29th). Gilmer won with 220.5 points, far ahead of second-place Marist with 147.5.

Other local participants were Whitewater’s Jason Higgins (113), Josiah Webb (160), James Teague (182) and Gary Hogg (195), along with Fayette County’s Trevor Rhone (120), Caleb Sellers (126) and Bejohn Baker (195).

Jonathan Parrish of Starr’s Mill (126) came in sixth, the only local athlete to place at state in that classification. Other wrestlers at the meet included McIntosh’s William Jewell (120), Chris Eulenfeld (132), Aaron Brewer (138) and Hunter Fox (285), along with the Panthers’ Michael Runyon (145), Jake Schaper (160) and Cory Carter (220).

Starr’s Mill finished with 20.0 points (21st) while McIntosh had 16.0 (tied for 22nd). Camden County tallied 213.5 to take first place, followed by Woodland-Bartow with 127.0.

Landmark was represented on the medal stand in Class A by Collin Greer (second at 132), Payton Hayes (sixth at 138) and Titus Creamer (fifth at 182). Joshua Cobb (160) and Steven Bedosky (285) also wrestled at state for the War Eagles.

Landmark’s 31.5 team points were good enough for 13th place. Commerce won going away with 283.0 points, as Turner was a distant second with 90.0.
