David Bartlett Roten Jr., 34, of Peachtree City, Ga., served in the United States Army as a decorated Special Forces Weapons Sergeant. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Valor, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and Iraq Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, among others. Since his honorable discharge in 2010, David has been supporting the U.S. Government in austere environments. He was killed in action on November 27, 2014 in hostile territory supporting the US Government.
Born in Memphis, Tenn., David lived his life as an avid traveler, adventurer, and sports enthusiast. His interests included snowboarding, surfing, mountaineering, motorcycling, and weight lifting. In all he attempted, whether work or play, he pushed himself to be the best. David died as he lived, with unwavering commitment, passion, and courage.
David is survived by his mother, Cynthia Chamlee Giovinco, and his step-father Dr. Joseph Giovinco; his father, David Roten, Sr. and his step-mother Jean Roten; brother Matt Roten and wife Cynthia; brother Greg Roten and wife Katherine; sister Lisa Worsham and husband Jeff; step-brothers Joseph and Nicholas Giovinco; maternal grandmother, Martha Chamlee.
He is preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Roy Chamlee, Jr.; paternal grandmother June Eaton Roten and paternal grandfather Keener Roten.
A Memorial Service was held on Thursday, December 04, 2014 at 10 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Peachtree City, Ga., followed by a graveside service at 2 p.m. at the Georgia National Cemetery, Canton, Ga.
