The Peachtree City Council on Oct. 2 gave approval to initiate the annexation process for the Heritage of Peachtree City personal care apartments on the city’s east side to rescue the facility from its failing septic tank system.

The 3.52-acre property is situated between Ga. Highway 54 and Sumner Road. Located in unincorporated Fayette County, the property is zoned community commercial.

Owned by HCRIX Royal LLC, the site consists of 49 personal care apartments and is accessed by a driveway off Hwy. 54.

The property is currently served by an on-site septic system which is failing and has had capacity issues for a number of years, said Senior Planner David Rast in a Sept. 25 letter.

Heritage representatives said the current situation with the septic system consisting of three 1,500-gallon tanks requires that it be pumped every 4-5 days.

“The applicant desires to annex the property into the city limits and then connect to the sanitary sewer line and pump station proposed adjacent to Sumner Road,” Rast said.

Rast said the applicant has stated that there are no plans for expansion or redevelopment on the property, nor or there plans to request a second entrance from Sumner Road.

Rast said the typical annexation request can be decided in 45-60 days.

Councilman Eric Imker said he hoped the process can be expedited in light of the expense involved in pumping the septic system.

Extending sewer outside the city limits would require returning to council for an additional meeting, said city attorney Ted Meeker.

The council voted unanimously to approve the first step in the annexation process.
