An electrical fire Sunday afternoon outside City Hall in Peachtree City cut utilities to the building and caused various utility outages across a portion of the city. Some of the outages continued until later in the day Sunday while other locations saw the return of utilities Monday.
The fire on a utility pole adjacent to a number of utility mechanical boxes also led to the closure of the eastern portion of Willowbend Road between Hip Pocket Road and Ga. Highway 54 by the Presbyterian Church and City Hall.
The damage from the fire resulted in the outage of various utilities in residences and business in areas on both sides of Hwy. 54. Electricity, phones, cable and Internet services were disrupted for varying amounts of time Sunday.
Many of the disruptions had been resolved later Sunday, though Internet and phone service, as in the case of City Hall, were not restored until Monday afternoon.
Though the majority of the damage had been corrected Tuesday morning, utility crews were still at work outside City Hall and Willowbend Road remained closed at Hwy. 54.
The fire involved a utility pole and mechanical boxes outside City Hall that carried multiple utilities serving city facilities, said City Clerk Betsy Tyler, adding that the exact cause of the fire is not currently known.
The area of the fire immediately south of City Hall is the location of several mechanical boxes used by various utilities.
