Fayette plans feral cat roundup

A trial program approved April 10 by the Fayette County Commission will trap and neuter feral cats and return them to the locations where they were found. The alternative to euthanizing the cats was a request of the Fayette County Humane Society.

The six-month trial Trap, Neuter and Return (TNR) program will center on four areas where feral cats are often seen and reported. Those areas include the Fayette Pavilion, Bryson Lane in Fayetteville, the Ga. Highway 85 Connector in Brooks and the Paschal Road/Dividend Drive area in Peachtree City. The number of feral cats reported in those areas run from 20-50 animals.

Commissioners noted that the various municipalities would need to sign off on the trial program.

The program is an alternative to the nearly daily need to euthanize cats, Fayette County Animal Control staff told commissioners. Once neutered and returned, the cats can live out their lives without reproducing.

The trial program will run for six months at the request of the Fayette County Humane Society. Staff will provide program updates to the commission.
