Joan Holland Wilson went home to be with the Lord on March 18, 2014.
She was born in Cedartown, Ga., to William Pratt and Annie Casey Holland. After graduation from Cedartown High School, she moved to Atlanta and attended business college before being employed with the Georgia State Public Service Commission.
Joan met her husband, John, while working with the State of Georgia. During their dating period, she also attended art school, studying under a noted portrait artist. They were married on November 13, 1966 and have two children: Rhonda Ann and William Carlton.
During the children’s early school years, Joan served as the President of the PTA at Tyrone Elementary School and worked as the secretary of Hopewell United Methodist Church in Tyrone and Friendship Methodist Church in Fayetteville. After the children graduated from high school, she returned to her job at the Public Service Commission with the State of Georgia until her retirement.
After retirement she worked for the T.S.A., Atlanta Airport Security for 3 years. An avid reader, Joan worked for years at the New Hope Baptist Church library, volunteering there until the onset of illness. People who knew her always noticed her beautiful smile that shined the love of the Lord into every soul she met during her lifetime.
Joan read hundreds of books, building up her own personal Christian library, but God’s Holy Scriptures occupied much of her reading time. The Bible also served as a source of divine inspiration for her art, moving her to translate her thoughts and feelings to canvas. As an artist she produced several outstanding paintings such as “The Return of Christ,” “The Seven Candles,” (Rev. 1:12-16) and “The Crown.” These may be seen at the Celebration of Life Service. These and others captured the true quality of her artistic talent.
She was preceded in death by her parents William Pratt and Annie Casey Holland. She is survived by her husband of 49 years John (Johnny) B. Wilson; her son William C. Wilson; her daughter Rhonda Kelly, her husband Brian and their three children: Tiffany, Brian Jr., and Kimberly of Evans, Ga.; and her brother Jerry Holland and his wife Silvina of Monticello, Ga.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, April 5, 2014 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Parrott Funeral Home with speakers Betty Noble and Dr. Hugh Kirby. All are encouraged to sign the online guest registry at www.parrottfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a donation to Shattering Darkness, P.O. Box 71844, Newnan, Ga. 30271. The family will receive guests 30 minutes prior to the service at Parrott Funeral Home, 770-964-4800.
