After passing by two years of school, she graduated early from Huntington Township High School. Pursuing work at the age of 16, she took a job as a telephone operator at Indiana Bell in Marion, Ind.

On a blind double date she met Ralph Vogel. Although he was intended for her friend, the two hit it off and the couple went on to marry on March 1, 1941. The couple decided to venture into their first donut business in 1947 with $500 dollars borrowed from her dad Clyde Hall and $500 from a partner. Six months later realizing the partnership wouldn’t work, they borrowed another $500 to own it themselves. After several moves and a change of name from Dixie Créme to Vogel’s they sold the best donuts, coffee and baked goods in Marion and the surrounding counties. Best known for their “World Famous Carmel Rolls,” the Vogel’s were in business for over 56 years.

While Ralph became the president of the Marion School Board, Maxine became the leader of the Mother’s Club, modeled for many events and in the late 60’s and early 70’s was president of the Ladies Golf Association of Meshingomesia Country Club. Maxine was an avid golfer and bowler and took pride in being a member of the “Old Ladies Golfing Association,” loved the Chicago Cubs & her dog “CoCo.” Ralph and Maxine were founding members of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, Marion, Ind.
