Paul H. McCullough, 81, of Fayetteville, died Saturday afternoon after a long illness.
He and his family moved from Indiana to Georgia in 1966 and moved to Fayette County in 1986. He and his wife built the “pretty yellow house” which was known as a “landmark” on New Hope Road.
In Atlanta, he was superintendent for major builders – overseeing construction of several hundred apartments and condominiums from 1966 to 1985. During that time, he also traveled throughout the southeast erecting buildings for restaurant franchises. He then went to work for Creative Office Concepts, one of Atlanta’s largest office equipment sales companies as manager of installations. The owner of that firm retired in 1991, and Mr. McCullough founded his own company, Furniture Installation Services, and later Georgia Sales Associates. The installation company continues to be operated by Mr. McCullough’s son Robert McCullough.
He was born Sept. 16, 1932 to Stanley and Mae Ponsler McCullough. In 1950, he graduated from Sandcreek High School in Decatur County, Ga. and worked for Cummins Diesel for several years. He and his wife, the former Carolyn Sinn of Rockcreek Township in Bartholomew County, were married May 10, 1953. The couple met at the Baptist Youth Camp near Westport during the summer of 1951. He was an active member of Westport Baptist church, and served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956.
Both Mr. and Mrs. McCullough were involved in activities at College Park High School for 12 years when their children were in school there. Mr. McCullough served as Booster Club president. During football season, he served as organizer and overseer of the concession standsóturning them into a profit-making enterprise for the school. He and his wife also were presidents of the Band Parents, and enjoyed accompanying band and orchestra members on annual trips to Florida – stopping on the way for concerts at a detention facility for juvenile offenders, and a march in the Thomasville Rose parade before hitting the beach with the young musicians.
Mr. McCullough was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Fayetteville and was the “go to” man for guidance on church construction and maintenance projects.
Survivors are his wife of 60 years, Carolyn; four children, Amy McCullough and husband Steve McCullough, Lee McCullough, Jimmy McCullough and wife Sandy McCullough and Robert McCullough and wife Elizabeth McCullough. All reside in the Fayetteville area. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, Ryan Kunz and husband Jake Kunz, Laura Crews and husband Bobby Crews, Joshua McCullough and wife Jennifer McCullough, Whitney Moon and husband Paul Moon, Andrew Nix, Jacob McCullough and wife Brittany, Scott McCullough, Sarah McCullough and Daniel McCullough. There are 10 great grandchildren, Colby, Carly, Gracie and Samuel Kunz; Luke, James and Joshua Moon; Morgan and Ellison Crews and Brooklyn McCullough. Also surviving are three brothers, Royce McCullough and wife Mary of Greensburg, Richard McCullough and wife Carol of Port Charlotte Fla. and Columbus, and Jerry McCullough and wife, Karen of Columbus; nieces, nephews and cousins. A sister, Ruthann Cross of Westport, his parents, and a great-granddaughter, Hannah Moon, preceded him in death.
A family graveside service was held at Camp Memorial Park in Fayetteville, followed by a memorial service January 28, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Fayetteville.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Prince of Peace Vacation Bible School Fund.
