A road project that will correct line-of-sight problems on Ga. Highway 54 and Gordon Road and another that will realign a portion of Haynie Road at the old railroad crossing were approved Tuesday by the Coweta County Commission.
Coweta County Director of Transportation and Engineering Tod Handley said the issue with the intersection at Hwy. 54 and Gordon Road deals with the line-of-sight looking north on Hwy. 54 from the Gordon Road intersection. The project calls for raising the road grade on Hwy. 54 to eliminate the problem, said Handley.
The Haynie Road portion of the project deals with the old railroad bridge that crosses the railroad that was abandoned. The bridge is deficient so the county purchased that right-of-way and will realign that section of roadway, Handley said.
Initial bids for the projects exceeded cost estimates and were rejected by commissioners at the Sept. 17 meeting, County Administrator Michael Fouts noted Tuesday.
“The transportation and engineering department asked each of the three contractors to review the projects and identify, quantify and calculate a value for potential value engineering opportunities on the project,” said Fouts. “The department also provided a list of 10 items, for which quantities could be adjusted by using alternate construction techniques or alternatives.”
Fouts said two of the bidders adjusted their bids, with McCoy Grading receiving the $1.27 million contract by unanimous vote.
The project cost will be funded by SPLOST (Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax) transportation funds.
