G. Michael Bass, president and CEO of Piedmont Newnan Hospital, has announced his retirement, effective August 31.

Bass has served as the hospital’s chief executive since November 2005 and has led the Coweta community’s sole acute care hospital to become a healthcare leader in the south metro Atlanta area.

The hospital’s daily operations will remain under the direction of Nathan Nipper, chief operating officer since 2007.

“It has been an honor for me to serve as president and CEO of Piedmont Newnan Hospital for the last 8 years,” said Bass. “I could not be prouder of the accomplishments our hospital has made in recent years to improve healthcare in our community, thanks to our incredible leadership team and staff.”

Bass has led major initiatives for Piedmont Newnan, including the transition of Newnan Hospital, Inc. ownership to Piedmont Healthcare ownership in 2007 and the opening of the new Piedmont Newnan Hospital on Poplar Road in 2012. Under his leadership, the hospital has experienced tremendous growth in its medical staff community, introduced new programs and medical services and made vast improvements in quality and customer service. The hospital has received numerous awards and recognitions for its achievements, including being named “Small Hospital of the Year” in 2012 by the Georgia Alliance of Community Hospitals.

Most recently, the hospital celebrated a successful fiscal year with completion of the transition into its replacement hospital facility, implementation of an integrated electronic health record system, and the addition of a robotics-assisted surgical program and interventional radiology services.

“My tenure with Piedmont has been the epitome of my 44-year healthcare career,” said Bass. “It is, by far, the finest organization with which I have been privileged to work, and I will especially miss the special Piedmont Newnan family which has always made me proud. I feel confident that Piedmont Newnan will continue to be successful in its efforts to provide and further expand excellent healthcare services to Coweta County and surrounding communities.”

Named the 2012 Small Hospital of the Year by the Georgia Alliance of Community Hospitals, Piedmont Newnan is known for its eye-catching and environmentally conscious design that has been awarded a Design Citation by Modern Healthcare for design excellence, functional utility, flexibility and sustainability. Its new facility, completed in 2012, is currently being considered for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. A member of Piedmont Healthcare’s South Region, Piedmont Newnan specializes in robotic surgery and women’s services. The hospital also offers 24-hour emergency services, medical and surgical services, and rehabilitation services.
