Jerome (Jerry) Merrill Crockett, 63, Newnan, Ga., passed away on Tuesday, July 2, 2013. He was the fourth child of Durwood and Mary Crockett.

Jerry was born in Atlanta and attended East Atlanta High School. He is a resident of Newnan, frequenting his cabin in Blue Ridge, Ga.

Jerry retired from the State of Georgia after serving 34 years, working under several state agencies and Governors. He retired from the Governor’s Office of Planning and Budget.

He is survived by his wife Veronica, children Shannon and Shane Crockett, daughter-in-law Angie, grandchildren Taylor, Katlyn, Avery and Nathan, great-granddaughter Harper, his siblings Altys VanKesteren of Bowie Maryland, Jim Crockett (Vel) of Marietta, Beverly Pearce (Bill) of Smyrna, and numerous nieces and nephews. Jerry has many friends and a large family that he loved to spend time with.

While attending Georgia State University, he worked full time in student finance before being promoted to the Department of Public Safety as an Accountant. In 1977, he was promoted to the Department of Human Resources where he was the Assistant Director for the Office of Financial Services. He was later recruited to the Department of Adult and Technical Education as the Assistant Commissioner for Finance, Budget and Personnel. He then was promoted to the Governor’s Office of Planning and Budget as Assistant Director where he retired.

Jerry spent every morning with his wife enjoying retirement. The two would have coffee, read the paper, do the daily word jumble and enjoy morning walks. He enjoyed his retirement playing golf with family and friends, traveling, spending time on the lake, and enjoying his mountain retreat.

Jerry will be remembered by the hundreds that love him for his intoxicating laugh, his joyful spirit, and his ability to laugh at himself and others.  He was a loving husband, father, brother and friend to all that were privileged to know him.  He has left a huge hole in the hearts of all that he has left behind.

Services will be held Saturday, July 6, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. in the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home with Pastor Steve Geyer officiating. Visitation will be held Saturday, July 6, 2013 from 2:00 p.m. till service time.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to Christian City Children’s Home in memory of him.  Christian City, located at 7345 Red Oak Road, Union City, Ga., is a residential home that is dear to his heart.
