Dear Unsigned Widow, we read your recent letter published in The Citizen and felt compelled to respond to you.
The frustrations that come with aging sometimes can be many. Although we know there is no substitute for the care of family members, we at Fayette Senior Services may be able to help ease some of the issues you face.
Our mission here at FSS is to help older adults such as you and your sister preserve your independence, improve your quality of life, and connect with your community.
You mentioned several challenges in your letter with which we may be able to help. Depending on your specific situation, we may be able to offer assistance with meals; with transportation to medical appointments, to the pharmacy, to church, or to the grocery store; with light housekeeping; and with routine home maintenance tasks and repairs.
We also connect people to community resources, one of which is an Energy Assistance Program to help with heating costs.
The first thing we need to do is assess what challenges you have and get our team of specialists working to help find solutions for you. No two situations are alike and every individual is unique, but we offer programs and services or can locate community resources for you and your sister.
We know money is always an issue for seniors on a fixed income, and as a not-for-profit agency, most of our services are either contribution-based or may be available on a sliding scale.
One last thing, the social aspect of aging is one of the hardest to address. However, when you asked, “Who wants to spend time with an old lady?” the answer is, “We do.”
Whether participating in one of our subsidized social programs or as a general member, we want you to live well and age well. So when you feel like getting out, we want you to come and play with friends either here in Fayetteville or in Peachtree City.
We call it the Life Enrichment Center and it is truly different from any traditional senior centers. It’s a beautiful place where adults over the age of 50 come to socialize, enjoy a meal in our Ultimate Cafe, re-energize their bodies, exercise their minds, and lift their spirits.
At the Life Enrichment Center, we have activities that are too many to list here but a few include: crocheting, quilting, playing card games, creating arts and crafts, travelling, exercising, and gardening. Some of our upcoming seminars cover topics such as how to get a good night’s sleep, Medicare, medical nutrition, and the GBI crime lab. We also have movie days and cookouts coming up.
At Fayette Senior Services, we care about the emotional, social, and physical well-being of older adults such as you and your sister.
First things first, though. Won’t you please call us and let us see how we can help you. Call Lyn Thomas, our Information Specialist, at 770-461-0813. We look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Fayette Senior Services
