The reorganization of the Coweta County Dept. of Information Technology and the Development and Engineering Dept. last week by the Coweta County Commission is expected to improve service delivery and save taxpayers an estimated $115,000.

Commissioners by a unanimous vote approved the reorganization proposed by Community and Human Resources Director Patricia Palmer.

Palmer prior to the vote said the proposed reorganization and the subsequent position reclassifications have been evaluated by the Position Classification Review Panel as defined in the Personnel Management System. She said the proposed changes will provide significant improvements in service delivery and will result in savings of approximately $115,000 in salary costs alone, with $45,000 in saving coming from IT and $70,000 in savings from Development and Engineering.

Palmer said the IT reorganization is due to changes in technology and the method in which technology support services are provided throughout the County. She said the move would reclassify the director’s position and would restructure several supporting positions to include the Operations Manager, Support Analyst I and Support Analyst II. The proposal would also include the addition of a GIS Analyst position as part of relocating a Stormwater GIS Technician position from Development and Engineering to support GIS projects throughout the county.

Palmer said the reorganization of the Development and Engineering Dept. is based on the necessity to centralize transportation projects and related procedures and to streamline the development review functions.

The proposal includes changing the name of the department to Transportation and Engineering and includes transferring the Transportation Planner from Planning and Zoning to Transportation and Engineering, Palmer said. The reorganization also includes the elimination of the Assistant Director position and reclassification of the Staff Engineer and Right-of-Way Specialist positions. The proposal also includes the transfer of one Stormwater GIS Technician to the Department of Information Technology’s GIS Division.
