Early birds wanting to cast their ballots can do so starting Monday morning at 8 a.m. at the Fayette County elections office in downtown Fayetteville.
The three-week advance voting period starts July 9 and will run Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday, July 27.
The early birds will have a lot of pecking to do on the voting touch screens as the July election features all the non-partisan races such as those for local and state judgeships along with partisan races for sheriff, tax commissioner, county commission posts and board of education posts.
Also on the ballot is the proposed 1 percent regional transportation sales tax and a question to allow the Sunday package sales of beer and wine in unincorporated Fayette County.
The Sunday alcohol package sales question will be posed to voters countywide, even if they live inside the city limits because the results of a similar question in Cobb County was overturned recently because the question was posed only to voters in the unincorporated area, said Fayette County Elections Supervisor Tom Sawyer.
Woolsey voters will also face the same Sunday package alcohol sales question on their ballot, Sawyer noted.
This year early voters can also cast their ballots on Saturday, July 21 at the county elections office as well, Sawyer noted.
On Monday, July 23, the precincts at the Peachtree City Library and Tyrone Town Hall will open for early voters. Voters can also wait until the “last minute” and vote on election day: Tuesday, July 31, at their normal precinct.
Sample ballots for the election are posted on the front page of the county’s website at www.fayettecountyga.gov, but they are aggregated and some voters might not be eligible to vote on all of the races, Sawyer cautioned.
The election will be at-large for all posts, as they are elected countywide, even the three seats up for grabs on the county board of education and the county commission. At-large voting means all county residents can vote on all three contested seats on each governing body.
Voters who have questions about which races they will be voting for, or where their polling place is, may consult the Georgia Secretary of State’s My Voter Page at sos.georgia.gov/mvp.
If a runoff election is necessary, it will be held Aug. 21, Sawyer said.
