What began as an effort to recognize two of Peachtree City’s founding fathers is about to blossom into the first phase of a History Time Line that will be featured at City Hall Plaza.
The busts of founders Joel Cowan and Floy Farr have been completed, and they will be erected in the “Founders’ Corner” exhibit that was approved last week by the City Council.
Funding for the entire time line project has been raised with private donations, and some money is still needed to complete the full vision.
The Founder’s Corner will include a stone-facade wall, brick pavers and the pedestals on which to display the two sculptures.
It also will include one of seven bronze plaques planned for the display to top the wall and explain the history of the area prior to the city’s incorporation in 1959. The work is expected to cost about $15,000 in total, with construction being done by Selective Designs.
Part of the reason to start construction of the Founders’ Corner is so the public can see the project start to take shape, and perhaps more people will be willing to participate in the fundraising.
The main goal of the project is to provide a place where residents can reflect on the city’s past and its history can be documented. Also, the hope is to inspire visitors to take part themselves in the city’s continual progress, organizers have said.
The History Timeline project is envisioned as a series of in-ground markers for each year, with the markers stretching around the iconic fountain in the plaza near the library. The Time Line will begin at Founders’ Corner and the plan is for it to mark a full 100 years ending at the corner nearest the Library entrance, where there will be a place for a Centennial Corner to celebrate the city’s anniversary in 2059.
