A kennel specializing in training hunting dogs received unanimous approval from the Coweta Commission April 17. The owners of Gold-Plated GunDogs located near Moreland were requesting a conditional use permit and variances for the 38.35-acre property.
County Director of Planning and Development Robert Tolleson in a March 28 letter described the intent of the owners in establishing the kennel on their 38.35-acre property that is one of a number of 5-1,000-acre parcels in the Bear Creek Road area that is home to various residential estate farms.
Tolleson said the request involved the addition of the kennel to the rear of the existing horse barn with an extended fenced area to serve as a play area for the dogs.
“This is not a typical kennel in that the dogs’ natural hunting skills will be honed while enjoying life on the farm. The proposed kennels will be located over 370 feet to the nearest property line to the west with distances from 548 feet to the south and greater to the north and east,” Tolleson said, adding that the property lines are buffered with hardwoods and that no other residence is visible from the proposed kennel site.
The variances approved by the commission dealt with the driveway area and the idea of maintaining the rural nature of the property while supporting the country-style kennel operation.
The approval came with two conditions that included compliance with Americans With Disabilities (ADA) requirements and the agreement that the owner work with the county in regards to generation of dust and related techniques pertaining to difficulties specific to county roadways.
Approval of the requests were recommended by the planning department and the Board of Zoning Appeals.
