DOT’s Crosstown-Hwy. 74 overkill

I read that the Georgia DOT has decided that at the intersection of Ga. Highway 74 and Crosstown Road there is a need for a stop sign for the right turn lane.

There is a dedicated lane into Hwy. 74 at this intersection and no need to stop.

The current system allows traffic to move freely and avoids unnecessary congestion at one of our busiest intersections.

There are countless similar intersections across metro Atlanta where the DOT has not placed a stop sign. Instead there is a sign to tell drivers to “keep moving.”

The stated reason for this move is the DOT is concerned that those traveling north on Hwy. 74 could shift to the right lane and cause an accident to those who legally continue to move and are in this lane.

Granted, I have witnessed countless drivers turning onto Hwy. 74 at this intersection move into the center or far left lane, crossing a solid white line to do so.

Perhaps the police department should ticket those who do either for “failure to maintain lane.”

The DOT is guilty of overkill when the police department can’t solve this problem with a few well-given tickets.

Maybe then those who can’t seem to follow simple traffic laws wouldn’t cause the rest of us an inconvenience.

What idiocy. What overkill. Have we no say in this?

Perhaps we should convert our new traffic circles back to 4-way stop signs to avoid similar potential accidents.

Europe laughs at our idiocy.
